PPI and DPI are related, but different
PPI describes how many image pixels are printed per inch. DPI describes a printer’s physical ink or toner dots. People often search for a “DPI calculator,” but pixel-to-print-size calculations use PPI.
Changing only the resolution metadata does not add detail. The actual pixel width and height determine how much image information is available.
Prepare the file for a print lab
- • Crop to the lab’s exact aspect ratio before sharpening.
- • Ask whether the lab expects sRGB, Adobe RGB, or a supplied profile.
- • Check bleed and wrap requirements for canvas or borderless products.
- • View the final file at 100% for focus, noise, halos, and retouching marks.
