Photos with Words

This juried exhibition explores the many ways in which photographs can incorporate words and the meanings that can result from such combinations. Juror Liz Lee selected forty photographs for exhibition on the walls of PhotoPlace Gallery and on the gallery website. She also chose an additional thirty-five images for PhotoPlace's "On-Line Gallery Annex." All seventy-five photographs will be reproduced in a full color exhibition catalogue available for purchase from Blurb Books.

JUROR'S STATEMENT: Photographs are very good at conveying actions and information but not so good at explaining ideas. Words are the language of explanation; but language is an abstract system, open to subjectivity and bias and not very good at precise description. Although we tend to think pictorially, when we need to communicate we do so with language, requiring the brain to deal with contending sets of messages. Consequently combining image and text provides a rich opportunity to delve into psychological and informational relationships between visual and word. The images I have chosen for this exhibition bridge that communication gap between images and spoken language by investigating the synergy between photographs and words. The words and symbols used in these works may describe and defend or may mask and obscure, but in each case the question remains, what do the words picture and what do the pictures say?

Liz Lee is a Professor of Photography in the Department of Visual Arts and New Media at the State University of New York at Fredonia where she has been serving as Department Chair since 2005.
